What online play actually is
Steam tags the game as both Singleplayer and Multiplayer. The multiplayer part is Skirmish mode, where you battle other players online asynchronously, plus visiting a friend's camp and helping with crafted items or resources. Nobody needs to be online at the same time.
There is no live co-op campaign and no local split-screen. The four Clan story campaigns are single-player.
Crossplay and cross-save status
We checked Steam, PlayStation Store, Xbox Store and both Nintendo listings. None of them lists crossplay or cross-save. The Xbox page lists PC under "Play with", but that field alone does not confirm play between Steam and Xbox.
Cloud saves exist inside each platform family, such as Steam Cloud or Nintendo's Save Data Cloud. They do not move a save from one family to another.

Playing with friends today
If you want to visit each other's camps, buy on the same platform. If you want live roleplay together, the free Warrior Cats: Ultimate Edition on Roblox is the official option that offers it.
