Default keyboard controls
Players report WASD for movement and the arrow keys for turning the camera. Interact defaults to E. Enter, Space, Escape, Backspace and Tab handle menus and prompts. We have not seen an official full key list, so treat this as the player-reported default.
| Action | Key |
|---|---|
| Move | W, A, S, D |
| Turn camera | Arrow keys |
| Interact | E |
| Confirm / menus | Enter, Space, Esc, Tab |
| Mouse camera | Not supported at launch |
Why the mouse camera does not work
The community tool documentation explains that the game turns off mouse capture, so mouse movement never reaches the camera. It also says the rebinding screen is hidden on PC and that edited bindings in the save are ignored.
Steam reviews mention that the developer has acknowledged control complaints, but we found no official patch notes adding mouse look yet. We will update this page when a patch lands.
Use a controller if you can
The game was clearly built around a gamepad, and console versions play with standard controllers. On PC, plugging in an Xbox or PlayStation pad gives you analog movement and a right-stick camera. Steam Input lets you remap any controller button from the Steam overlay.
Remapping the keyboard
Until an official fix arrives, players use outside tools. Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager can remap keys for the game's executable only. The community WC Mods project includes a key remapper and an optional mouse-look script.
These are unofficial tools, not supported by the developer. Use them at your own risk, back up your saves first and only download from the project's own page.
- Easiest: play with a controller and Steam Input.
- Keyboard only: remap keys with PowerToys Keyboard Manager.
- Mouse look: community mods only, unofficial.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I change the keybinds in the settings?
- Not on PC at launch: the rebinding screen is reported as hidden and not working. Use a controller or an external remapper.
- Does Clans of the Forest support controllers on PC?
- Yes. Players report that a controller is the most comfortable way to play on PC.
- Is the Steam Deck playable?
- We have not tested it. Its built-in controls avoid the mouse problem, but check for an official compatibility rating.
